Lone Star Antique Tractor & Engine Assn.
Minutes of Meeting, July 3, 2008
The Lone Star Antique Tractor & Engine Association met on July 3, 2008, at the show grounds in Whitehouse at 7:00 p.m. with 42 members present. Robert Gee led the opening prayer. Barbecue sandwiches from Ribmaster in Whitehouse were available for the meal prior to the meeting.
The minutes of the June meeting were approved as read with a motion by Ed Snider and second by Cecil Wyatt. The treasurer’s report which showed a balance of $9,841.69 in the general fund and $3,235.00 in the scholarship fund, were approved with a motion by Bob Kindig and second by Joe Hoffman.
Charles asked for a report on the status of the seed cleaner that the club had acquired as reported at the June meeting. Don Perkins has worked on the cleaner, replacing 1 piece of wood and doing some tin repair. He has applied a coat of Thomson Water Seal which brought out some of the writing and yellow pin-striping that was a part of the original markings. He also put degreaser on the machine working parts and cleaned it well. He reported that he needs 1 gear to make the hand crank work correctly and requested that anyone with access to small gears which he described -+contact him. As for the use of the machine, he reported that if he had a choice of using this machine or waiting for a windy day, he’d wait for the windy day.
Charles reported that a number of members from our club have attended various other tractor shows since our last meeting. He reported that he had seen Wayne Rogers in Columbia, Missouri. Wayne reported that he was disappointed that there were not as many big IH’s on display as he had expected, but he did see a ˝ scale F-20.
Ed Snider reported that several members had attended the show in Oklahoma, which had the largest display of equipment he had ever seen. He reported that a bad storm blew in around 4:00 p.m. which caused the crowd to diminish quickly. Ed Lambright actually participated in the plowing during the Oklahoma show. Norman Rowden stated that there were 1400 acres on the actual location and that the owner is the person who brings his belt-powered sawmill to Henderson each year in the spring.
Larry Lough gave a report on the plough day committee. Although the committee has not met, he reported that the 65 acres was directly across the road from the grounds where we were meeting. He says we can now mow and get the grounds ready for a plow day later in the fall this year. He had spoken with several members and they had determined that we cannot have the plow day the Friday before the show this year, but possibly we can work the show into a 2-day show next year and have the plow day on the first day of the show. Charles stated that there were some dates open in October, so possibly, by our next meeting, we can have a date in mind. Charles also asked for those with plows to let the committee know so that we can determine the activities that we can do during the plow day.
Charles then reminded the club that the Ben Wheeler July 4 festivities were the next day in downtown Ben Wheeler. He had received an e-mail that it would run from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. with free hotdogs and ice cream for all attending. There will be bands playing throughout the day with activities for children including jumping houses. Nancy Lambright announced that she was told there might be an issue with parking a big number of large trailers, so tractor exhibitors were allowed to come in on Thursday afternoon. Charles reported that Brooks Grammel is trying to re-develop the downtown area with plans for a museum to focus on antique farm machinery and tractors.
Charles also announced that we will have our tractor & engine display on August 16 in the TSC parking lot to promote our show. Joe Hoffman will place an ad in the Tyler Paper and, hopefully, Tom Perryman with 104.1 will announce the event on the radio.
The next item of business was the committee sign-up for working our show. Charles reported that last year we had 100 tractors at our show and had the best gate and auction that we had ever had. He stated that he had tried to incorporate the suggestions that were made following the last show into plans for this year. In this regard, he had spoken with Stan Kindig who is in charge of events, which is the largest portion of the show.
Charles asked Linda Sue to pursue getting a replacement decal to go on the sled for the one that was damaged during placement last year. He also commented that the suggestion was made to add additional shade coverage to the bleacher area. A discussion followed with the recommendation that 20 additional feet be added. Ray stated that we would need a few more feet of pipe and 6 extra brackets. Volunteers will need to meet at Ray’s shop in Van to complete the process some time prior to the show.
Ed Snider reported that the publicity committee, with Tonya Nutt, Nancy Lambright, and Joe Hoffman had completed their plans for the publicity.
Ray Glasscock and Jeff Holland recommended air conditioning the concession area. Ray stated that the temperature from the fryer gets to 350 degrees which heats the kitchen area tremendously. Ray stated that there is plenty of electrical power to the area to complete the process. Allen McIntarfer will get with Ray to see about the air conditioning installation. One suggestion for the concession was that more food be aimed at kids as well as having more breakfast items in a timely manner.
Larry Lough stated that the auction will be moved to the opposite end of the area from previous times and reminded people to bring their items. He also requested the large fans be placed inside the building.
Robert Gee stated that there will be 3 gates that need to be manned. He said the signs we had made directing exhibitors to the proper area had been a great help in getting people in the grounds. Charles reported that some of the people coming from the EDGE&TA group had asked to stay on the grounds with their self-contained RV’s. Cecil Wyatt and Don Perkins mentioned that perhaps they needed to be placed on the northeast corner of the grounds where there is less traffic and the tractor loading area is not nearby. When the question of security during the time arose, Charles reported that Bill Hood had stayed overnight in the past and would check on that for this year.
In the Safety area, Bill Jernigan expressed some concern about the number of helpers not being members of the club this year. Formerly Cindy Krugler had provided nursing services and Scott Croom had provided fire extinguishers. Charles stated that he will contact these previous members prior to our next meeting.
Charles asked those responsible for the tractor loading/unloading area to meet and plan the process and exact areas for this function. He also stated that we will set a schedule for the day which will include a set time for the EDGE&TA meeting in the building.
Charles reported that he had would like to have a flag-raising ceremony to officially open our show. Jim Kuechle is donating a flagpole and Chip McClain has given permission for us to permanently set the pole to diplay the US flag. Charles is going to contact the Boy Scout Troop in Whitehouse to inquire about their handling the flag ceremony and report back at our next meeting. He would also like to have a CD with the national anthem to play during the ceremony.
The discussion followed about the flags representing the different tractor companies. Ray stated that we could make additional poles like the ones last year if we have any additional flags.
Charles announced that our next meeting will be August 7 at our Whitehouse Show Grounds.
With no further business, the meeting adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
